Veraval is a city and a municipality in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, India. It is the headquarters of the district and is located on the Arabian Sea coast of the southern Kathiawar Peninsula.


Veraval was founded in the 13th or 14th century by Rao Veravalji Vadher, a Rajput. It was once a fortified port town of the royal family of Junagadh. The city still bears some remnants of its old Nawabi heritage, including the Nawabi summer palace. There are ruins of the old Nawabi fort and Nawabi Gates in and around the place. The old walls of the port are now ruined, but the impressive Junagadh gate and the Patan gate are still seen, but are in a very bad state.


Veraval is mainly famous for fisheries and it is the major industry in the city which is governed by the fisherfolk known as “Kharwas”. The city is also well-known for building boats. Here trawlers and traditional boats are used for fishing.


Other important industries in Veraval include match manufacturing, textile bobbins, and bone fertilizer. The city is also a railway terminus and lies on a major highway.


Veraval is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Other tourist attractions in the city include the Veraval Fort, the Nawabi Summer Palace, and the Somnath Beach.
