The city is named after Chikkamagaluru, which means "younger daughter's town" in Kannada. The history of the region dates back to the Hoysala empire, and the city was later ruled by various dynasties including the Vijayanagara empire and the Mysore kingdom.


Some of the popular tourist attractions in and around Chikmagalur include the Mullayanagiri peak, which is the highest peak in Karnataka, the Baba Budan Giri range of hills, the Kudremukh National Park, and the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. The city is also home to several ancient temples such as the Kodanda Ramaswamy Temple, the Amruteshwara Temple, and the Veerabhadra Temple.


Chikmagalur is also known for its coffee plantations and is often referred to as the "coffee land" of Karnataka. The city is a major producer of coffee and attracts several tourists who come to witness the coffee cultivation process and sample the different varieties of coffee.


The climate of Chikmagalur is pleasant throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. The city is well connected by road, and the nearest airport is the Mangalore International Airport, which is located around 150 km away.
